I was so excited to be going on my first trip representing The Destination Lounge, plus Barbados is an island I had always wanted to visit.
From the minute I arrived at the airport I knew we were going to be looked after well. We flew with BA in Club World; it is definitely the way to fly! With ample space, a chair that reclines to a bed, fantastic food and champagne throughout the flight (if you want it)!
We arrived in Barbados mid afternoon; we were greeted at our hotel with a rum punch cocktail and the all important postcard view of the beach and ocean. We stayed with Elegant hotels who have 6 hotels on the island, I was able to look around 4 of them – all of which offer something different, but more about them later!
Whilst in Barbados I fully recommend an island tour, we went on a jeep safari which took us all around the island to different coastlines and inland areas too. It was a fantastic way to get to see other parts of the island and also to get some history and a feel for the culture from the local guide. We drove past old sugar plantations and traditional colourful Caribbean houses, we went to a beautiful part of the island called Bathsheba – the perfect place for surfers!
I was lucky enough to take trip on a catamaran tour; this is an absolute must if you are planning a visit to Barbados. The cruise took us along the west coast, stopping for lunch and a spot of snorkelling – with pick-ups from the hotel; lunch and all drinks are included in the price.
We stopped at a place called Turtle Bay and oh my it lived up to it’s name, I ducked my head under the water with my snorkel gear on and to my amazement was surrounded by beautiful turtles gliding through the water. It was truly a magical experience!
I can’t talk about Barbados and not mention ‘Oistin’s Fish Fry’ – this is the place to be in Barbados on a Friday night. It’s basically an open-air food court and quaint market stalls with traditional Bajan food and entertainment with that famous Caribbean party atmosphere.
Whilst on my trip I got to visit the famous ‘Sandy Lane’ – a popular holiday destination for many footballers and even Simon Cowell. It is beautifully presented with all high tech equipment in each room, sociable yet private pool areas plus another stunning view.
I visited the ‘Fairmont Hotel’ who can boast that all of their rooms are ocean view rooms and is a firm favourite with David Hasselhoff!
But my trip was hosted by Elegant hotels, I stayed at ‘The Crystal Cove’ and ‘The Colony Club’. Of the 6 Elegant hotels on the island I visited 4 of them, and each of them have something very different to offer. They are all in stunning beachfront locations, with beautiful pool areas. Each hotel has a very different feel to it. ‘The House’ is an adult only sanctuary, ‘The Crystal Cove’ offers a relaxing All Inclusive setting, ‘The Colony Club’ is a tranquil hotel with lush gardens and ‘The Tamarind’ is family friendly and offers free child spaces. There is also ‘Turtle Bay Hotel’ and the brand new ‘Waves Spa and Resort’ these are both all inclusive hotels.
All of the Elegant hotels offer complimentary water sports, including water ski, banana boats, hoby cats and paddle boarding to name a few. I had a go at some kayaking – it was jus my luck that whilst out in the kayak a tropical shower should strike! I also used the snorkel kit provided and was amazed at the brightly coloured fish I found swimming close to shore.
The Elegant hotel brand seems to have a real knack at creating tranquil, relaxing atmospheres – even though the hotels were full it felt as though there were few people around.
Barbados is a fantastic island for everyone, and there really is something for all. The locals are all so welcoming and can’t do enough for you. If you’re contemplating Barbados, then I would say “Do it!” – Get in touch with us and we can arrange the trip of your dreams – we can pre book the excursions too!
Barbados for me was everything I imagined it to be; it was a fantastic experience. I’ve got a feeling I’ll be going back to visit soon!
